What Is GRP / FRP? A Simple Guide to Fiberglass Sculpture Materials

Shopping for a custom sculpture in Dubai, you'll see the same material called four different things: fiberglass, GRP, FRP and sometimes resin. Here's what they mean — and why this material dominates sculpture-making in the UAE.
Fiberglass, GRP and FRP are the same thing
GRP stands for glass-reinforced plastic. FRP stands for fibre-reinforced plastic. Both are just technical names for fiberglass: fine glass fibres set in a cured resin. When a UAE supplier says GRP sculpture, FRP statue or fiberglass sculpture, they mean the same material.
What is gel-coat?
The gel-coat is the smooth, coloured outer layer applied first in the mould. It gives the sculpture its finish and its first line of defence against UV and weather. A quality UV-stable gel-coat is the difference between a piece that stays vivid for years and one that fades.
Why fiberglass is so popular for sculpture
- Lightweight — easy to transport and install, even at large scale.
- Strong & durable — resists impact, corrosion, rot and insects.
- Weatherproof — with the right coatings, it handles UAE heat, sun and humidity.
- Endlessly shapeable — moulding allows complex, organic and repeatable forms.
- Any finish — faux bronze or stone, high-gloss colour, metallic or brand-matched paint.
- Cost-effective — far cheaper than cast bronze at the same size.
Fiberglass vs resin vs bronze
"Resin" sculptures are typically fiberglass too (resin is what binds the glass). Cast bronze is premium, heavy and permanent but expensive; fiberglass can be finished to look like bronze at a fraction of the weight and cost — which is why it's the practical choice for most commercial and decorative sculpture in Dubai.
